More than 100 years ago, Friedrich Hahne and Christian Wilkening founded a chair-making factory in Eimbeckhausen near Hanover. The high-quality, solid beech chairs were made from wood from nearby forests. In the 1950s Wilkhahn became a pioneer of German industrial design, experimented with new materials and evolved its own distinct design language. This resulted in purist furniture, the form of which was developed in strict adherence to function. Nowadays, Wilkhahn still stands worldwide for design made in Germany. It offers high-quality office and dynamic conference furniture which are benchmarks for the entire industry.

Already 35 years ago two young designers at Wilkhahn recognized that sitting cannot be healthy. Nowadays,  the media reports over and over again on the rise of backache and metabolic complaints resulting from people living and working in environments that are too static. Therefore, encouraging movement is indispensable in digitalised environments where physical activity is lacking. That is why Wilkhahn developed the free-to-move concept for its office swivel chairs. Underpinned by three scientific studies, the new concept is one of the most scientifically proved solutions for encouraging movement in offices.
